Tollgate Strike Action

PRESS STATEMENT: DETAWU IS EMBARKING ON TOLL-GATES STRIKE

DETAWU IS CALLING FOR A COMPLETE SHUTDOWN (STRIKE) ALONG THE N1 NORTH FREE WAY

The Democratised Transport Logistics and Allied workers Union (DETAWU) will be embarking on a strike action from Friday, 22 September 2017 commencing at 06h00.

This is after DETAWU has been engaged on protracted annual wage negotiations on behalf of our members at Tolcon, for the N1 North plazas (tollgates).

After eight rounds of lengthy negotiations, there was no amicable solution that could be reached between the parties that would have resulted to positive outcomes for our members. This is despite our concerted effort to persuade the employer to respond favourably to our member’s demands. The latter included the CCMA’s intervention that could not also yield to desired outcomes.

Workers are paid a meagre salary of R2300.00 per month. DETAWU believes that these vulnerable workers deserve better.

Key amongst our demands is that the employer must;

(a) Give at least R26.00 increase per hour for all categories
(b) Implement the overtime payment after compilation of the required 21 shits per month
(c) Establishment of the special Bargaining Unit to cover all the other categories of workers not covered by the current Bargaining Unit and
(d) Backdate the agreement July 2017.

The strike will proceed indefinitely until such a time that worker’s demands are met. The following plazas will be affected,

  • Knanskop plaza
  • Baobab plaza
  • Capricorn plaza
  • Nyl plaza
  • Zebediel plaza

We call upon the employer to take worker’s demands seriously and put a reasonable offer that will be worth the worker’s consideration.

We would like to extend our sympathy and profuse apology to the road users for any inconvenience they will be experiencing as a result of our strike and call upon their support in this regard.
